Pinball Fx3 Animated backglass NO TOYS

Pinball FX3 is a great virtual pinball platform and it is possible to enable animated backglass for the tables. This is not a FX3 feature but it is possible because of a very patient and tenacious programmer called DDH69.

There are a few steps required to enable this animated backglass on your Virtual Pinball cabinet or on your Desktop computer. I will cover the steps required in this article.

You will need 2 monitors to enable the animated backglass

I wrote an article for people who have a virtual Pinball cabinet HERE which talks about the additional steps.

Before i start i want to thank DDH69 for creating DOFLinx. This software has changed the way we are playing virtual pinball forever. Thank you Mjr for working in the shadow and for your very extensive work in maintaining virtual pinball software such as DOF and Pinscape. Thank you TerryRed for your dedication in creating scripts, tables mods, Pinup popper packs and SSF for FX3.

STEP 1

The 1st step is to download DOF and install it on your computer. You may find the latest version of DOF on Mjr’s website. DOF is a software designed to intercept the actions in the table to trigger certain actions like turning on a physical solenoid, LED or others. Even if you do not have any of this on your PC, the software is required.

Download DOF R3+( Windows Setup (MSI) )

http://mjrnet.org/pinscape/dll-updates.html

STEP 2

You will need B2S server to allow the animated backglass to communicate with FX3. There are 2 ways you can achieve this. You can download and install a standalone version of B2S server. You can download the latest version here. https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=12553 ( Thank you Toxie )

The second way, is the preferred method and will be easier for you to follow. Download VPX all in one version 10.6 from Here : https://vpinball.com/VPBdownloads/vpx-installer-10-6-0/ ( Thank you Randr and the VPX development team )

****** Just follow the installation prompts and pick the default paths

STEP 3

You will need to check your monitors resolution in windows by right clicking and selecting display settings. Check the resolution for each monitor and remember it. You will also need to set the Scaling to 100%

STEP 4

Now you need to set the resolution of the backglass in the software. Navigate to C:/Visual Pinball/Tables and double click on B2s_setup.exe and you will enter the resolution of the screen 1 and screen 2. If you are having problems where the backglass shows on the wrong screen, play with the Backglass display and exit.

STEP 5

In this step we will download and configure DOFLInx. What is DOFlinx? it is a software created and maintained by DDH69 that allows Fx3 to communicate with the different hardware in a Virtual Pinball cabinet. For the purpose of this tutorial i will keep it very simple, DOFLinx will allow you to have animated backglass while playing Pinball FX3.

Where can i find DOFLINX and how do i install it?

You can download the latest version of DOFLinx on VPforums. You can read about the installation and configuration instructions included in the DOFLinx download folder.

  • Extract the files and copy every files in the C:/DirectOutput folder

Now open the sample INI folder , and copy the file called DOFLinx-FX3 Backglass only-No toys.ini and paste it the DirectOutput folder. You need to rename it DOFLinx.ini

Also in the Sample INI Files folder, copy the file called directoutputconfig-colours_only.ini and you will paste it in C:/DirectOutput/config folder

STEP 6

Now we will configure the paths in the DOFLinx.ini

Download the windows editor Notepad++ Here: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/

Right click on the DOFLinx.ini file and edit with Notepad++

You will need to change the following Red lines

to the Green Lines

DIRECTOUTPUTCONFIG=c:\DirectOutput\config\directoutputconfig.ini

To

DIRECTOUTPUTCONFIG=c:\DirectOutput\config\directoutputconfig-colours_only.ini

PATH_B2S_SERVER=C:\VP\Tables\

To

PATH_B2S_SERVER=C:\Visual Pinball\Tables\

STEP 7

Create a folder called DOFLinx_FX3 in the C:/DirectOutput folder this is where we are going to place the db2s files. The db2s files can be found below or on VPforums : https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=39234

( See at the bottom of the article for the animated backglass .d2s files)

STEP 8

You are now ready to download the db2s files and unzip them in the C:/DirectOutput/DOFLinx_FX3 folder .

STEP 9

You now need to launch DOFLinx.exe ( it will run in the background. if you are uncertain whether or not it is running, check the task manager )

STEP 10

Launch Steam Pinball Fx3 and you will have the animated backglass appear automatically when starting a table

Note: I obtained the permission from DDH69 to post the zipped file including all Animated backglass. All single tables listed below will link to the original Vpforums website.

If you load this backglassx for DOFLinx then it will show if you are using FX3 via the grid menu when there is no game selected according to FX3.  It ensures that there is always a backglass on display. DOWNLOAD
